  • Where is Mardelian Farm?
Mardelian Farm is located in Virginia just a little south of the capital city of Richmond. We are in a beautiful and welcoming area know as Dinwiddie Courthouse.
  • Can I visit the farm anytime during the weekday or weekends?
Unfortunately no. Because we are a working farm we cannot have unexpected guests stop by without an appointment. However, if you would like to visit Mardelian Farm, go to the bottom of this page and sign up for our news and sales. We will notify you when we plan to have any special events or open farm days, like we have in the past. We find this is a great way to host customers and friends from time-to-time. We usually have these events in fall season. Become a Facebook friend because we also post when we'll have any "open farm days" or other special events.

  • How long does it take for your soap to cure?
It takes about six weeks for our soap to cure from the manufacture date. During curing the soap loses moisture and becomes hard and increases lather. One of Mardelian Farm's soaps Castile Soap is cured for one year before it is ready to be sold to our customers. This soap is one of the oldest soaps know to man.
  • Why do you use lye in your soap making?
As the old adage goes No lye--means no soap! All real soap is made with lye (sodium hydroxide) mixed with a liquid. Mardelian Farm usually uses goats' milk as the liquid. Any skin or hair cleansing product made with out sodium hydroxide is not soap, it is detergent. Please note that the lye has been made to sound very scary but in reality it is also used in the food industry as well as soaping. Lye is used to peel some fruits and vegetables, used in the making of doughy pretzels and to make hominy. It is also used to cure some meats.
  • What preservatives do you use?
Any liquid item that contains water or milk must have a preservative to guard against yeast and bacterial growth. We currently use a combination of Leucidal Liquid and AMT Coconut. It might be useful if we provide you with the manufactures info on these products. AMTicide® Coconut is created by fermenting Cocos nucifera (Coconut) fruit with Lactobacillus to deliver a non-irritating, effective and multifunctional product which can provide moisturizing and conditioning benefits in hair and skin care applications. In addition, it is effective at preventing the growth of fungus, specifically yeast and mold, thus providing additional protection for formulations using natural preservatives systems. Leucidal® Liquid SF MAX is Now on the Whole Foods Acceptable Premium Preservative List Approved for use as an ingredient in ECOCert Certified Organic products Leucidal® Liquid SF MAX is a salicylic acid-free, probiotic-based ingredient created by the fermentation of Lactobacillus in a defined growth medium. Optimizing the fermentation process to tighten the specification for bacteriocins, Leucidal® SF MAX provides broad spectrum antimicrobial results with an increased degree of confidence. Lactobacillus is one of the species of microorganisms used to produce fermented products such as sauerkraut and kimchi, a Korean dietary staple from cabbage. Like many members of the lactic acid bacteria family, Lactobacillus is capable of restricting the growth of other microorganisms by acidifying its environment. However, in addition to acidifying its environment, Lactobacillus also produces novel antimicrobial peptides, also known as bacteriocins, that are capable of providing broad spectrum antimicrobial protection.
